Primary fields of research
- Identification and evaluation of biomarkers and novel metabolic markers of aging (fatty liver disease, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular, cognitive impairment, dementia) and disease progression;
- Investigations of high-dimensional methods (genome-wide association studies, metabolomics and proteomics) in observational epidemiology;
- Advancement of methodological approaches for the epidemiological investigation of biomarkers in chronic diseases (Mendelian Randomization, pathway analyses, and layering of high-dimensional data) in traditional observational study design.
At University of Copenhagen, I am part of the team funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation Challenge Grant for the research project titled “Harnessing the Power of Big Data to Address the Societal Challenge of Ageing”. In collaboration with Statistics Denmark and Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen, we are combing omics in tissue biopsies from millions of Danes with the central registers to estimate prognosis and reclassify (biopsy-proven) diseases. https://www.dataforgood.science
At Harvard T. H. Chan I lead projects funded by the American Diabetes Association, the Bright Focus Foundation, and NIH to investigate plasma biomarkers in relation to diabetes, CVD, cognitive impairment and risk of dementia. Investigations are conducted in the Danish EPIC cohort study (Diet, Cancer and Health), the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis, and the Cardiovascular Health Study, and the Gingko Evaluation of Memory Study.
I have taught Cardiovascular Epidemiology (EPI223) as faculty at Harvard T. H. Chan from 2012-2020.
I also taught lectures on Mendelian Randomization and genome-wide association studies.
